FAQ Continued

Why are Comfort Cabinets needed in Texas?
National research has shown 23% of students have struggled to afford menstrual hygiene products, and 70% of students felt that their school environment made them feel self-conscious about their period! That same study revealed that 4 in 5 menstruating teens either missed class time, or knew someone who missed class time, because they did not have access to period products. Here in Texas, home to the second largest population of LGBT 13-17 year-olds in the country, roughly 20-25% students live below the federal poverty level. This makes access to personal hygiene items in Texas, especially period products, inherently a queer issue.

How can I get a Comfort Cabinet for my school?
-Club sponsors/advisors: Register your GSA club with Texas GSA Network and be sure to include your email AND physical mailing address!
-Student leaders: Ask your club sponsor to register your GSA club with Texas GSA Network!

Whose idea was it to bring Comfort Cabinets to Texas GSA Network?
The concept was the fruit of a conversation between the student leaders of the North Texas GSA Coalition, one of the student founders of PeriodTalk, a librarian from Austin Public Library, and the Texas GSA Network Coordinator discussing how to get menstrual hygiene products to trans boys and nonbinary folks who menstruate. Out Youth, home of the Texas GSA Network, funded the Comfort Cabinet pilot in Texas with 5 schools across the state from January-June, 2022.

What did you learn from the pilot project?
We’ll fill you in and share the data once the pilot concludes in Summer of 2022!
